Let’s take a quick look inside the SSD drive. Remember that opening the enclosure will void your drives warranty! The other side of the PCB has eight memory modules and a controller chip. We will take a closer look on the modules and the controller chip later on.

Verbatim SATA-III SSD uses sixteen memory modules (8GB each) to store the data. Modules are from Micron and they are made using 25nm process. Also, the modules are asynchronous which usually leads to good performance. Asynchronous modules are however slower than synchronous modules. The main reason manufacturers use async modules is the price – most “budget aimed” drives use async modules while high-end usually uses synchronized in order to get the absolute maximum performance.

Verbatim decided to use a Sandforce SF-2281 controller chip in their SATA-III SSD drive. The chip is the same one that is used for example in the newest Intel 520 SSD:s and Kingston HyperX drives.  Although the drive has sixteen 8GB modules – only 120GB of space is available. SF-2281, like most Sandforce chipsets, requires some headroom for the firmware and for over provisioning.

Like most SSD:s on market, the Verbatim SATA-III SSD uses tranditional SATA-data and power connectors. As we all know, this connector will fit into most computers available on market, with the exception of some laptops which might use mSATA connectors. It is suggested to use SATA-III approved SATA-data cables with this drive to achieve the maximum performance, but many SATA-II certified cables will work without a problem.
