Setup and initialization
Accessing the hard drives is very easy and requires only a quick turn mounting knob. Opening the drives, we find two Hitachi Deskstar 500GB SATA hard drives, which are fast and have a decent build quality. Nice to see that LaCie isn’t skimping on quality here. According to the user’s manual, you are supposed to contact LaCie about replacing these drives instead of doing it yourself. Setup and testing
Setting up the device for the first time is very straightforward; simply plug the device into the router and provide power, then install the LaCie software on each computer and you’re ready to start using the device. The drive has the nice blue LED on the front indicating power on and additional LEDs on the back showing network activity and hard drive activity.
Using the web-based software interface, you can configure a wide range of options, such as users, groups, share folders, etc. The interface take a little getting used to, and again read the user’s manual that came with the software to figure out all the options.
