First Toughts on the Squeezebox Boom
Imagine this: A Boombox that plays all your internet radio stations through a wireless connection. At the same time it's reasonably sized but is still able to actually pump out a good sound. You are probably wondering, is this even possible?! Well Logitech claims their new Squeezebox Boom is that device, this means you can even have it with you and just hook it up to any WIFI connection and play your favorite radio stations by adding the feed to your list. Now I guess it doesn't make it any worse that you can play your favorite music straight from your computer so let's get this show on the road and see what type of player we really are talking about. About Logitech: Since those early days, we have expanded our expertise in product design beyond the computer mouse, with a broad portfolio of interface devices that are the “last inch” between you and your computer or your console game, digital music or home-entertainment system. With products sold in almost every country in the world, Logitech’s leadership in innovation now encompasses a wide variety of personal peripherals (both cordless and corded), with special emphasis on products for PC navigation, gaming, Internet communications, digital music and home-entertainment control. For each of our product categories, we study how our customers use their digital devices, and then our designers and engineers set their sights on how we can create a better experience with those devices – richer, more comfortable, more fun, more productive, more convenient, more delightful. Specifications: The product:
The unit comes packed in quite a big box that covers the unit quite well from damage. Inside I also found a line in cable, power adapter, and a remote controller.
You also get a manual with basic instructions and a cd that also has a manual. The device is wrapped in a cloth bag to protect it from scratches during shipping.
The device really looks like a Boombox with a nice glossy black finish. The speakers are mounted on the sides while the amplifier is mounted in the middle with a big display. Looking at the amplifier part we can see that there is quite a few buttons but it's quite basic in the end. (even my electronically challenged wife can use it!) The wheel controls volume and your menu movements. Volume, play, etc... speaks for themselves I think, the buttons are comfortable to use and react fast when you push them.
In the back you got connectors for line in , headphones, LAN, and the power plugin. If you don't have wireless internet this can also run on normal corded LAN which is very nice since alot of people still lack it. The display has green text and when you turn on the device the first time you have to run through the setup where you choose language, network etc.
