CPU coolers come in all shapes and sizes, many with very intricate designs. However, sometimes a computer doesnt need a fancy cooling setup when a simpler yet effective solution might do.CrazyPC, a great online retailer of a variety of computer parts, sent us a sample of one of their popular CPU coolers, the Scythe Katana II CPU Cooler, which has a simple design package but promises respectable cooling performance nonetheless. Will simplicity rule the day?We will attempt to answer that question in this review.

Once opened, the box reveals the CPU cooler itself along with a three different mounting brackets to adapt to different CPUs and a set of instructions. There are only 4 small screws needed to install the mounting bracket, which is a contrast to some of the previous fans weve seen that require a bunch of screws, springs, and clips to install. Also included is a small package of thermal compound.Note that this cooler is compatible with a todays more popular Intel/AMD CPUs, including the AM2.Very useful if youre planning on upgrading your system soon.

Taking a closer look at the cooler, I first notice that this cooler has an interesting angled set of radiator fins, which are directed downward. Not sure why the designers tried to do this; if anything, I would have thought they would have angled them upwards away from the motherboard. The cooler comes equipped with a large 100mm fan that can easily be swapped out for a different fan if needed.

The heat sink is made of a machined copper base that interfaces with the CPU and a set of fins connected by six copper heat-pipes.The copper base appeared to be machined-smooth and free of imperfections, and it comes with a protective plastic sleeve that weve come to expect with most coolers.
