Along with the video card, the video card also comes with a sound output cable, which is needed to connect the audio from the video signals to the sound card, and an input adapter that allows connections for component audio/video and S-video output. This adapter is handy when you want to connect devices such as a camcorder or video game console to the computer.

Before I installed the video card into the computer, I first tested the monitor using the currently installed NVIDIA 7600GS to test out the maximum monitor resolution of 1440×900.Once the monitor was connected and received signal, it immediately ran an auto-configuration routine that optimized the settings of the monitor.I found the picture quality to be impressive, with the monitor display to be very crisp, bright, and responsive (8ms response time) and without any backlight issues. We were also lucky in that our monitor had ZERO dead pixels, which isnt a given in even your most expensive monitors. Overall, I didnt miss the fact that the monitor didnt have DVI; the picture quality was adequate for my needs.I find the widescreen aspect ratio an upgrade over the standard aspect ratio, giving you more display area and allowing DVDs to be viewed closer to their intended ratio.

Next, after removing the previously installed video card, I next installed the AIW VE video card.Hardware installation was just like any other PCI board; simply seat the card into the slot on the motherboard. Then, the software/drivers are installed using the provided disks.Despite the fact that the video card doesnt support 1440×900 resolution, the lower settings still provided decent picture quality, not bad for a product over 4 years old.

After adjusting the settings and realizing that the audio output has to be connected to the line-in of the sound card, I finally got the TV display to work.Since the AIW only supports standard definition cable (as opposed to digital or HDTV signals), the TV picture quality wasnt the best but was decent. The ATI multimedia controls were fairly straightforward and recording/capturing video was simple though CPU intensive, when compared to other capture cards that do on-board encoding.

Conclusion:

I found both the Acer 19 widescreen LCD monitor and the ATI All-in-wonder VE video card to be solid products that deliver on what they promise. At ~$180 USD for the monitor and ~$50 for the video card, these products will allow you to upgrade your computer without breaking your bank account. However, this industry is highly competitive, and every day new products are coming out with more features at the same prices.Because of this, I feel that these products deserve a 4 out of 5.

Pros:

+ Bright display
+ Decent price
+ No dead pixels
+ Widescreen aspect ratio

Cons:

– No DVI support
– Lacking many high end features
