Murdoc Tube mod - How to get 23°C CPU temp on Air
This mod is very cheap (cost me £3) and its effective, to show you how effective I will give you some numbers.
First of all I will give you the details on my computer:
CPU: XP2400+ @ XP2600+
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-7vr
Memory: Corsair XMS Platinum
Video Card: Albatron Ti4200p Turbo
HDD: WD Special Edition Caviar 120gb 8mb cache
The CPU cooler I use is a Scythe kamikaze, I have also used a volcano 7+ with this mod it had very similar temperatures, just a little louder.
As I write this article the ambient temperature in my room is 23 °C the computer is quiet especially for a modern computer but I have a CPU temp of 25°C that’s 2°C above ambient, this is a temperature that water-cooling struggles to provide.

This mod does have a draw back it involves having a 100mm tube outside of your window, but I have had this setup for 6+months and its not an issue for me. The ‘tube mod’ has gone through several versions, the first version I use badminton shuttle tubes and a lot of duct tape to make a tube, it brought air from outside my window to the back of my pc where a fan pulls the air into the case, this was very inefficient and it lowered my temps in the region of 5-10°C nothing to shout about really.

The second version I obtained a section of 100mm drainpipe and cut this to the correct size’s to lead directly to my processor using a mitre saw, this worked much better and had a powerful fan stuck to the end out of the window. My dimensions were a little off so it was slightly the wrong shape it looked very ugly and air escaped from the joints, so this could be improved.

The version I’m using now is by far the simplest and doesn’t look too bad. I used 3meters of tumble dryer hose, cost me £3, its flexible and it pushes straight onto 80mm fans with ease and is very secure, I have connected the fan from a Coolermaster jet 7 to the end out of the window, the noise from the Coolermaster fan even at full speed is quiet.
As I said above I’m very pleased with this mod, I have been running it for some time, I have even modded it by putting a blue CCFL in the tube. I had to extend a Y splitter so that I could connect power to the fan. To secure the fan to the tube I punctured holes in the tube and used cable ties to hold the fan, the tube on the other end connects directly to the fan on the CPU cooler.

A really simple mod that works well and very cheap for the performance gain, but with a few draw backs. I have had sub 20°C temperatures at night and below ambient temperatures.
