Murdoc PSX controller mod

Anyone that has ever used a playstation pad will think they are great, but I long ago stopped using my playstation and haven’t touched a console in a while, I much prefer the game play and graphics of PC games, but a keyboard just doesn’t cut it on driving games. So I set about converting my playstation pad to work on a PC, there is several converters that cost around £6 to £15 being a student in search of a part time job I am reluctant to spend the money and its more satisfying to do the mod your self. I researched how this mod could be done, their was several sites but they where confusing and didn’t show the cheapest way to perform the mod. It is possible to use the +5v from a LPT port to power the game pad but this requires purchasing diodes so you don’t blow your port up, a much cheaper and easier way is to get the 5v from a molex connector, if you’re a modder you will most defiantly find a few of these under your desk or on a old fan etc. Also the other part you will need is a DB-25 connector; these can be brought for about £2 or if you are feeling cheap you can get them off the end of an old printer cable.

First of all I’m going to assume you no longer want to use the pad on your playstation, you can keep the plug on the playstation by using an extension cable and cut the end off that. First of all you need to cut the plug off the pad, leave about 3 inches of cable connected to the plug, strip back the covering to show the small wires, then strip a small amount of insulation off each small wire. Then use a DVM/ continuity meter to find out which pin constitutes to which wire. Or a much easier way crack open the plug which makes it easier to find which wire goes to which pin, I opened the plug on my controller using a pair of garden shears, I recommend you don’t do this as it could be dangerous! Draw a diagram and wire down which pin connects to which colour wire. Now strip the cable and the small wires on the pad like on the plug above. Tin all these wires.

Now get your DB-25 connector, if you are using an old printer cable, fond which pin goes to which wire, the wires may be all the same colour, if so use stick labels to mark which pin they are, the pins we will be using are 2, 3, 4, 10, 12 and 19 tin these pins (put a bit of solder on them)

Solder pin 8 of the pad (orange wire on my pad) to pin 2 of the DB-25 connector. Solder pin 4 of the pad (yellow wire on my pad) to pin 3 of the DB-25 connector. Solder pin 3 of the pad (blue wire on my pad) to pin 4 of the DB-25 connector. Solder pin 9 of the pad (brown wire on my pad) to pin 10 of the DB-25 connector. Solder pin 1 of the pad (green wire on my pad) to pin 12 of the DB-25 connector. Solder pin 6 of the pad (black wire on my pad) to pin 19 of the DB-25 connector. (their may be another wire that has to be connected to pin 19) The colours stated are for the controller I used, I performed this mod on 2 SONY brand controllers and their was differences in the wire colours.

Now grab a molex connector, solder a cable to the +5v pin and a cable to the 0v pin of the molex pins. Solder pin 5 of the pad (red wire on my pad) to the +5v from the molex (this must NOT be connected to the DB-25 connector in any way!). Solder the 0v wire of the molex to pin 19 of the DB-25 connector. If your using a duel shock pad you will notice there is one wire left (pin 7 of pad) this is an optional wire to connect, you need a +9v supply to be connected to this wire to make the duel shock function of the pad work. This can be obtained from a plug in type transformer, as long as it is 9v and has at least a 500mA rating it should work, connect the positive wire of the 9v supply to pin 7 of the pad and negative to pin 19 of the DB-25 connector. Check your wiring! You don’t want to blow your LPT port up!

Put the casing on the connecter, plug the molex up and the pad to the parallel port, switch on the computer.
