How to Make or Replace a Window

I kind of needed to replace the window in my X-Dreamer case because it got messed up (scratched and cracked) from me playing with my dogs in my computer room. So while I was replacing the window, I decided to add another fan to the window to help cool my video card.

The first thing you’re going to need to do is remove the window from the panel. Most factory windows are installed with plastic pushpins. To remove these all you have to do is use a small tool such as a small screwdriver or punch and push out the center pin from the backside and then remove the outer pin.

When you’ve got all the pins out, the window will come right out.

Next step is to cut the new window to the correct size. The easiest way is to use the score and snap method. To do this all you need is a straight edge and a sharp knife, place the straight edge where you want the cut, take the knife and run it along the straight edge several times to get a deep grove. Then all you need to do is push it in the opposite direction of the grove till it breaks off. If it feels safer for you, you can cut it with a saw or dermal, but that takes much longer.

Now that you have the window cut to fit, all you have to do is mark the mounting holes and where you want to put your fans. I used the side panel as a template for drilling the window mounting holes and used a drill press to drill the holes less chance of cracking the plastic. For marking the fan placement I used an old fan. It makes it easy to get the mounting hole spacing right. I used a 3” hole saw to drill out the fan openings, you can use a dermal or jigsaw but I think a hole saw gives the best results.

Be sure to clean up the fan opening using some sandpaper (looks are everything). After you get it sanded and cleaned up, the next step is to mount the window in the panel. First remove the protective film on the side that contacts the side panel, put the window in place and align the holes, then just push the plastic pins back through. It’s just that easy. And don’t forget to mount the fans of your choice.
