Wii Transformers Video Game Review

As you’ve certainly noticed by now, the Transformers franchise has gotten a lot of press lately with the release of Transformers the Movie and just recently the DVD. Not surprisingly, the video game industry has capitalized on the new popularity, releasing video games based on the old series. Today we’ll take a look at one such title, Transformers: The Game for the Nintendo Wii. Will this game be “more than meets the eye”? Read on to find out more.

The story behind Transformers: The Game follows closely to the recent live-action movie. I personally didn’t like the movie very much; I thought it was too much of a departure from the original cartoon series (which I grew up watching and still love). In the game, you have the choice of playing either the Autobots or the Decepticons as they battle for control of the mysterious “All-spark”. If you enjoyed the movie story and want to control the action, you will likely enjoy the video game’s adaptation of it.

The Gameplay:

Gameplay in Transformers: The Game is broken up into a series of chapters, each revolving around a mission to complete to bring you closer to the story’s ultimate confrontation. You are placed in a large map and have the ability to explore freely, similarly to Grand Theft Auto and others. But the world isn’t as free-flowing as GTA, since you have only one choice for which mission to complete. I did enjoy playing the Decepticons more than the Autobots; many of their missions involve destroying as much as possible which is pretty cool.

Controlling the Transformers in the game is hit and miss; the game is a third-person shooter. Transforming between forms is easy, but controlling the camera was a different story; I often lost lock on where I was looking and felt like giving up at times. I also didn’t particularly enjoy the combat system; there’s a lot of emphasis on melee fighting rather than cool weapons. The game did take advantage of the Wii controls, though I didn’t think they were as innovative as other games.

The Graphics:

Transformers: The Game is a pretty good-looking title, with crisp graphics and cool special effects. The characters in the game are well-drawn and detailed, and the transforming is smooth. I also enjoyed the multitude of explosions and the ability to destroy almost everything in the environment.

The Audio:

Audio in Transformers: The Game is decent yet not too noteworthy. The sound effects are pretty cool and the soundtrack is a bit repetitive yet enjoyable at times.

Movieclip:

Conclusion:

Transformers: The Game for the Nintendo Wii is an enjoyable yet not overally impressive game. The game does follow the movie very closely, and I’m glad you have the option of playing either Autobots or Decepticons (the later are much more fun to play). However, the gameplay does leave something to be desired, and the missions are fairly linear. But if you ever wanted to get behind the wheel of a Transformer and blow stuff up, here’s your chance.

Pros:

+ Story follows closely to the movie
+ Can play either side
+ Nice looking graphics

Cons:

- Lacking battle system
- Camera is hard to control
- Linear missions
