Wii Rayman Raving Rabbids 2 Review
If you’ve read some of our past video game reviews, you’ll remember that we enjoyed one odd game in particular, Rayman Raving Rabbids, for its unique game play and quirky story. As with most popular games, the gang is back for a sequel. Will Rayman Raving Rabbids 2 for the Wii continue the streak of solid games for this series? That’s what we’re here to find out in this video game review.

The premise behind the story mode in Rayman Raving Rabbids 2 is once again slightly odd. In this installment of the Rayman series, Rayman, has discovered that the rabbids (or rabbits) that are bent on taking over the world have set up shop in a local mall. Rayman’s mission is to take “trips” with the rabbids and thwart their plans along the way. Overall, I thought the story was unique and was an interesting way to thread together a bunch of minigames, but the game really isn’t about the story.
The Gameplay:

Gameplay in Rayman Raving Rabbids 2 takes full advantage of the Wii’s innovative, motion-sensing controllers, showcasing both the Wii remote and the Wii Nunchuk. Each minigame requires a different use of the controllers, from aiming/shooting, to driving, even dancing. Each minigame is easy to learn yet challenging enough to master, making this game’s replayability strong.

The variety of the minigames is the game’s main strength, with a wide range of unique challenges. I’m not sure where the game designers came up with games such as “fart wars”, but they are certainly fun to play and bring a smile to your face. Most of the appeal of the story mode is unlocking the new games and then being able to play/master them in score mode. My favorite mini-game by far are the song games at the end of each trip; these are Rock Band type games where you play along with the music. The songs are great and the ability to play them in multiplayer mode is a welcome addition to this version (though I’d love to have more songs!). Overall, I thought this version did a much better job with the multiplayer aspects of this game.

Along with the mini-games, completion of each trip unlocks a shooting game, where you get the chance to shoot rabbids with plungers. The shooting games are more extensive than the mini-games yet not too long. I was a little disappointed that the designers changed the controls slightly (reloading involves hitting a button instead of motion of the controller), but still the shooting game is fun to play.
The Graphics:

The graphics in Rayman Raving Rabbids are solid, despite the lack of 480p for this title. The characters are drawn with good detail and a sense of humor; these are some of the oddest-looking rabbits I’ve ever seen. The backgrounds and special effects are colorful and add to the game’s playful mood. Kids will certainly enjoy the cartoon-like appearance of the game.
The Audio:
Similarly, the audio in Rayman Raving Rabbids is fun and adds to the overall sense of whimsy in the game. While there is no dialogue, the sound effects are self-explanatory and are humorous. The background music is based on current pop songs and adds to the overall atmosphere.

Conclusion:
Overall, Rayman Raving Rabbids 2 by Ubisoft for the Nintendo Wii is a much-improved version of the first installment for the Wii and is very fun title. There’s a wide variety of simple yet challenging gameplay aspects, and the story and graphics/audio enhance the experience. And with the improved multiplayer elements, the game is one of the best “party” games for the Wii. This game is a great title and one that should be part of your collection.
Pros:
+ Great gameplay showcasing Wii’s control system
+ Solid graphics
+ Pleasant audio
+ Variety of challenges/minigames
+ Multiplayer mode could use some improvements
Cons:
- Bring us more songs!
