When you think of skateboarding games, one name typically comes to mind- Tony Hawk. His line of skateboarding games sets the standard, and each one is usually very high quality. Tony Hawk’s Project 8 (P8) for the PS2 puts you in control of an amateur skater trying to ascend up the ranks of the skating world in hopes of joining Tony and 8 other elite skaters on the “Project 8” team. To do so, you have to complete a number of tricks and challenges in a variety of settings and against a number of different skating opponents along the way. As you complete tasks, you gain power-ups to improve your skating skills.

This version follows a similar premise to some of the original Tony Hawk games like Tony Hawk Pro Skater. I found the concept simplistic and not too exciting, especially since you start off at rank 200 and have to make it all the way to 8, which isn’t too hard if you are good at these types of games. Also absent is any online play or customization found in previous Tony Hawk offerings.
The Gameplay:

If you’ve played other Tony Hawk games, Tony Hawk P8 will feel similar to them in terms of gameplay. For me, I’ve always found skateboarding games to be awkward, and unfortunately this game is no different. Controlling your speed and direction require a lot of practice, and every trick takes a lot of skill and practice. Perhaps more advanced gamers who are used to skateboard games are able to master the moves quicker.

Along with the typical skating and jumping, there are a wide variety of tricks and skills contained in the game. Trick sequences are strung together using the manual button, and this version brings a new feature called “nail a trick”, where you can slow down the action and perform intricate foot maneuvers using both thumbsticks. This feature is pretty cool but gets a little old after a while.

The Graphics:

Graphics in Tony Hawk’s P8 are solid though nothing spectacular. The animations are drawn well and have a lot of detail, but the characters faces seem a bit off and look weird. The environments are also detailed with a lot of ramps and places to grind, and the tricks do look realistic when performed correctly.

The Audio:
The game offers a decent soundtrack in-line with the skateboard culture. There is a good variety of tracks and most are enjoyable to listen to. The sound effects are basic but get the job done.
Conclusion:
Overall, I thought Tony Hawk’s Project 8 for the PS2 was a decent skateboarding game but offers little in the way of originality. The game seems dated, considering that Tony Hawk games better than this one have been around for years. Combined with non-intuitive gameplay and average graphics/sound, this game is probably best left on the shelf unless you have to have every skating game.
Pros:
+ Decent graphics and sound
+ Easy to pick up
Cons:
- Difficult gameplay
- Tedious storyline
- No online play
- Little customization
