We continue our look at console skins from Decalgirl.com with a look at two skins for the PS2. In our review of their Xbox skins, we were impressed with the quality and easy installation of the skins. Will the streak continue with these PS2 skins? Let’s find out.

The Story:

The DecalGirl PS2 and PSTwo (the skinny PS2) skins came to us in a flat envelope with a sturdy cardboard backing that provided extra support. The skins come in sheets that contain multiple skin parts. The skins were also inserted into thick plastic bags to prevent scratches.

As with the Xbox skins, I was impressed by the high level of detail of the skin and the quality of the product. This isn’t something that was printed on a cheap ink jet printer; the graphics are as crisp and clear as any other decal/skin I’ve ever seen. The colors are rich and bright, and there is no streaks or blurry lines. I remember my first video game console was an Atari 2600, so it was nice to see a homage to that console in the PSTwo skin. The Webslinger skin also had nice lines that almost look 3D.

My PS2 was purchased back when they first came out, so I don’t have access to the new skinny PSTwo to install the 2600-themed skin. Given that my PS2 was so old, the first step was giving the console a thorough cleaning using the recommended rubbing alcohol and a clean rag. After cleaning, the first piece I tried to install was the front port panel cover, where I was surprised to find that the opening for the front grill/air filter didn’t line up completely with the one on my PS2. As you can see in the picture, it appears to be on the wrong side, which was a shock given the great fit of all the other skin components I installed. I did some searches on the Internet and believe that Sony moved the grill sometime in production. While certainly not their fault, this might be something Decalgirl would want to note and perhaps allow their customers to choose.

After getting past the front panel installation, I next tackled the two remaining pieces; the top panel and the small end panel. Thankfully, these two pieces lined up perfectly and were easy to install. I like how the lines of the top panel match up with the front panel design, giving the skin the look of a single-piece design.

Our sample skin also came with two controller skins. This skin was actually the hardest one to install because of the curves of the controller and the single piece design of the skin. However, after some patience, I was able to fit the skin on the controller.

The final results are shown above; even with the slight misalignment of the front panel, the box looks a lot better than it did about 45 minutes before I started the installation. Once again, I was able to improve the look of the box by leaps and bounds by the simple addition of the skins.

Conclusion:

The DecalGirl Full-Color skins for the PS2 and PSTwo turn an average-looking console into a piece of art. The skins have very vibrant colors and are made with high-quality vinyl, and there are tons of styles to choose from. While there were some alignment issues with the PS2 skin, they don’t distract from the overall design. Overall, these skins will jazz up your console and are well-worth the installation effort.

Pros:

+ Vibrant graphics with deep colors
+ Easy to install
+ Fit perfectly without need for cutting or trimming
+ Right amount of adhesion

Cons:

- Misalignment of the front panel grill
- Controller skin is a little tricky to install
