VOIP the latest hype or actually the future?

We all hear about Voip here and Voip there but what does it really stand for? Voip stands for ‘Voice over Internet control’ which basically means the phone over the internet. We have seen Skype, MSN, etc… come onto the market with the marketing slogan, ‘call free over the internet.’ But is it really free? It is partly free, however you have to have a computer connected to the internet at all times to be able to receive calls and make calls over the internet. Skype has done something good when it comes to the issue of being able to call to a normal phone over the internet. You can buy some of their ‘Skypeout’ credits and use them to make calls.

Tip of the day!!
My wife for example calls her relatives in America and we live in Sweden using the Skypeout credits. With roughly 25$ she can call almost 25 full hours to America, which compared to our normal phone with extremely low rates we still save over 60$ a month by calling with Skypeout. Are you not kind of locked up to the computer while calling since you need the mic and headphones to talk? No, you are not due to the fact that Skype has developed a cordless phone that works both as a normal phone and as a Skype phone. This is a great addition to VOIP calling since these phones are just as normal cordless ones with the same battery time and reach. So basically if both parties get a cordless phone all they need to do by the computer is to click the call button.

Since you sit with your megabits of fast speed internet and all you do is surf the net and download something from time to time, you might as well use them for something useful while having it and at the same time save some money. I personally feel that paying the phone companies for having a phone is ridiculous since you are already paying for calling. With Skype, MSN, etc… you have the same voice quality as with the normal phone unless the internet is messing around which has happened to us for 5 min during the past 6 months. Those cordless phones are not free but you have to remember the money you save from not calling with the normal phone saves up for more than the phone cost already within 6 months if you call a bit abroad also. I believe that the VOIP industry is great for the future and I know that there are several competitors out there for Skype and MSN so it will be interesting how far they can actually reach within a year or so as all of them are looking for a feature that the others don’t have.

The time is slowly getting closer when the money sucking phone companies will start to realize that the future is here and things get cheaper for everyone, the internet has so much possibilities if used right and it’s time that the companies start using it and really offering the performance and features that the internet has to offer. Some companies already offer IP phone calls but they charge a lot for it and they still do not use the full capacity that there is.

There are several phones out there this is just an example, on Skypes webpage you can find corded and cordless phones. If you decide to run with a headset I would recommend a high quality one from the bigger manufacturers. You might pay a bit more but in the long run you get better sound quality and a longer lasting headset, the cheap ones tend to brake after a few months of use.

Plantronics headsets are something I have seen recommended in several places on the net.
Sennheiser makes excellent headphones and the headsets are no different.

Senheiser PC155 headset

With these you get really good sound quality in voice communication and also music.

It might seem like I’m favoring Skype with this review, but actually it doesn’t matter which program you use. I believe competition between companies is the best thing that can happen for the consumers, and I’m more than happy to welcome any new software out there. Hopefully this article has made you a bit wiser on the VOIP market and helped you to decide what to do.
