Dreamhack Winter 2008
I still remember my first LAN parties about 15 years ago with IPX protocolls, BNC cables that from one moment to the other would not work and games like C&C and Quake.
There was something special about those LAN parties, there used to be about 5 or 6 of us sharing a slow DSL connection of 512KB. Since one of our buddies was the only one at the moment with a "faster" connection it was something very special to be able to download something without waiting hours. Sharing files and pictures was something special also that I will never forget. When fragging someone in Quake gave a real kick or running over someones base in C&C just gave you a huge self confidence boost.
That was about 12-15 years ago, that was before Dreamhack the worlds biggest LAN party with almost 10,000 computers connected to each other. My friends actually attended Dreamhack a few times before I actually made it there. I have actually never attended it as a gamer, I have been there twice now to make articles for Rbmods.

Now I have brought friends along everytime I got there so they can see how Dreamhack has changed the last few years. When it started they had somewhere around 4000 computers and according to sources a very cool atmosphere with a bit more mature people. Everwhere you went you could see people gaming different games and having a blast. When you go down there these days you will see ALOT of teens, 14-16 year olds playing World of Warcraft. I have to admit that over 80% of the computer were running WOW this time, and in my opinion this really takes the edge out of LAN parties, as far as I see it the LAN parties are there so you can actually go and slap the person in the face that fragged you :) Now everyone plays WOW on various servers and there is nothing to the LAN party anymore, you might as well sit at home.
Now these are my opinions and experiences and I am not saying WOW is a bad game but it has really killed the LAN gaming in my "old" eyes. I can finally go and say, "it was better before".
Now lets get on to our latest picture series from Dreamhack Winter 2008.

After driving for a couple of hours we finally made it down there, at the entrace we recieved our press-passes which were ready to go so all we had to do was get them and go on. All was handled very well.
Steelseries was the first booth we visited and they have recently released a official WOW mouse together with Blizzard, apparently it has room for 17 keybindings on it at least. It can also change led colors to whatever you prefer, hopefully we will have a review for you within a few weeks. There were also some people gaming with these mice showing of their WoW "skills". Did not know you needed to much of it in Wow, yes im a WoW player myself :).

Intel had put some major cash into this event with a huge booth about their new i7 processor that has been released. They had some computers running with it and I have to admit games were running quite smooth and had awesome load times. Hopefully we will have a review on this very soon for you.

Right beside Intel, Norton had a huge booth and alot of things going, they were giving away free stuff in the main hall, but at this place they were promoting their new Norton Antivirus gaming edition which was released at Dreamhack. Unfortunately I missed the press meeting they had as I arrived one day to late for the event.
As usual Asus has a big booth going on with everything from World Record overclocking to product displays. They were displaying their latest video cards just as an example and if you look at them most of them are very familiar as we have looked at the earlier.

At the Asus booth they had a pro gamer sitting and playing Counterstrike vs curious gamers, and the Pro player actually looked quite bored as always. He could probably have slept and still been able to win without to much hassle.

The Nvidia PhysX engine was also displayed at various places and there is actually a bit of different with it on and off. It is hard to explain so I will leave it up to you to test at home.
FZ.se is one of Swedens biggest online gaming sites, they review games from PC´s to consoles, they had their own booth going where people were able to play Guitarr Hero I believe.

There was 3 or 4 gaming areas, where you are limited to a small space with your computer and monitor. People have solved this by building shelves to have the computers on. Some people even bring their own office chairs, which is understandable since they sit from Thursday to Sunday morning. There is a sleeping area but alot of people tend to fall asleep on the keyboard although this is not allowed they get their needed hour of sleep. There is alot of crew going around waking people up so they don't get to long to sleep if they are not in the sleeping area.
