Ultra X3 800W Power Supply Review

A few months ago, we had a chance to review the 600W version of the Ultra X3 PSU line and were impressed with its performance and overall design. Ultra also offers power supplies with even more power and cables, and they have sent us an Ultra X3 800W power supply to check out. Is it possible to have too much of a good thing? The Ultra X3 800W power supply (PSU) arrived much like the 600W version did, in a surprisingly large and sleek black package with simple X3 logo all around. The top of the package has a hidden fold-out panel that describes the features and output rating of the PSU. While it’s odd to find a products packaging impressive, I thought Ultra did a great job at leaving a solid first impression.

Ultra also offers a 1000W and a 1600W version of the X3, which is great for those higher-end builds with multiple graphics cards.

Opening up the package, the PSU can be found snuggly secured between two foam inserts. Along with the power supply, the package contains screws, modular power cables, and the AC power cable.

Unwrapping the PSU from the protective bag, the first thing you can’t help but notice is that there are no cables attached to the PSU. In other words, this is a modular power supply. Modular PSUs allow PSU customization by plugging in only the cables that are necessary and making for a clean build. Another great feature is Ultra’s patented “flat-force” cable design takes modular cables to a new level, with easier routing and a sleek-looking appearance. I really like the flex-force design, since they are pretty easy to route compared to other cable types.
