The included base allows for a slightly angled positioning of the enclosure. The enclosure easily attaches to the base via two screw posts.

To open the enclosure, first remove the bottom plate of the enclosure. Then, slide one side away, revealing the inner components.

Another unique feature of this hard drive enclosure is that the hard drive is not attached with screws but is rather “sandwiched” into the enclosure. The hard drive sits on 4 posts that have anti-vibration rubber on them, and the top of the enclosure has a similar rubber surface that securely holds the drive in place. Once the drive is put into place, simply reinstall the cover and the bottom plate and you’re done. Installation overall couldn’t be any easier.

Once the enclosure is turned on, the LCD emits a soft blue glow. Obviously this is a fairly low-tech enclosure when it comes to indications; there is no VFD screen that displays any useful information, such as temperature, a temperature alarm setting, or a hard drive usage time recorder.
There was no difference in transfer speed between when the drive was installed normally versus when it was in the Thermaltake VI-ON enclosure, which can be expected since there’s thankfully nothing to slow things down. The hard drive temperature remained low thanks to the good airflow the case provides. I was also impressed by the low operating noise due to the various anti-noise/anti-vibration features of this enclosure.
Conclusion:
The Thermaltake VI-ON HDD enclosure is a nifty product that does its job well. Installing a hard drive is a breeze, and the temperature and vibration management features of this product make this enclosure stand out amongst the crowd. While it isn’t as sophisticated as some other HDD enclosures on the market, the product delivers solid performance and should increase the life of the hard drive it houses.
Pros:
+ Easy installation
+ Great performance
+ Clean looking design
+ Good airflow and thermal management
+ Quiet operations and anti-vibration features
Cons:
- None so far
