Thermaltake M9D Computer Case Review

Looking at the side of the case, we find an oversized 230mm cooling fan and a clear window displaying the inside of the case. I like the quality of the 230mm fan; sometimes manufacturers throw these fans in almost as an oversight, but this one has a low profile and also has guards to protect the fan from hitting against other objects inside the case. As we’ll see later, this colorful fan gives the case some extra style.

Once the case is open, we get a view of the large number of drive bays, each with tool-less features, meaning that you can ditch your screwdriver when installing components. There are similar tool-less features on the PCI card bays as well. Here, we also get a glimpse of another 120mm fan providing additional air flow exiting the case.

Wrapping up our look at the exterior, we find a fairly plain back to the case with a grill for that aforementioned exhaust fan. The bottom of the case has nice rubber feet to prevent scratches on your floor when you move the case.

The installation aspect of the Thermaltake M9D computer case was like a tale of two cities. On the plus side, the case offers ample real estate inside for the motherboard and all the components. I didn’t have any issues with clearances and cable routing space was adequate. I like the 9 drive bays, which provides ample room for multiple devices (shown here with a VGA power supply and fan speed controller).

On the negative side, I was disappointed to find out that the “tool-less” drive bays turned out to only be for the 5.25” drive bays. The 3.5” drive bays, which are used to install hard drives, not only require screws but are also almost impossible to install, thanks to a the large housing that fits over the bay.

There were a number of places where I had trouble installing screws, where I found the holes blocked by rails and other obstructions. Also, I found the metal edges to be very sharp; I actually cut my hand in a couple of places.
