Thermalright Hr-05 chipset cooler

The heatsink is designed with all aluminum fins, copper base (nickel plate) with a single heatpipe running through it. The HR-05 is marketed as a passive heatsink, meaning no fan is needed, but you have the option of mounting a fan on it. The base could have had a better finish as it's not quite mirror like.

It's supposed to hold a 70mm fan but I managed to install 80mm without any problems. Fan installation is done using four cable ties and is done in about a minute.

Installing the HR-05 is extremely simple requiring no tools. Motherboard removal may be required to remove existing heatsink but for installation it's not. For installation itself, you must choose which metal bracket is right for your motherboard, apply a layer of thermal paste then simply push the spring loaded push pins through both the mounting bracket then the motherboard.

To make the heatsink fit I had to move my graphics card down from PCIe 1 to PCIe 4, so you'll have to check your motherboard layout to make sure you can use this heatsink. After the graphics card is moved, the HR-05 has plenty of room around it, not obstructing anything else in the case.
Test System:
DFI Lanparty UT nForce 4 Ultra-D
AMD 64 3200+ Venice
2x512MB Corsair XMS 3200
eVGA Geforce 6800 256mb
Seagate 120GB 7200.9
Soundblaster Live Platinum 5.1
Antec SL350
The heatsink is tested as both passive and with a fan running silently. Temperatures are compared to Microcools Northpole XE. All temperatures are in fahrenheit.

Without a fan running, Thermalrights HR-05 is comparable to the Northpole XE while using a fan. With the fan running silently, the HR-05 is five degrees fahrenheit under the XE at stock 1.48v, while at 1.67v the HR-05 manages seven degrees under.
Conclusion:
As a passive cooler the HR-05 is comparable to a leading chipset cooler that uses a fan; with a fan the HR-05 should suit even overclockers. Installation is a breeze, requiring no tools or motherboard removal. The only drawback may be its height depending on where your chipset is placed on your motherboard..
Pros:
+ Easy installation
+ Silent cooling
+ Fan may be added for even better cooling
Cons:
- Height
Red&Blackness gives it 4 out of 5 dots
