Tuniq TX-2 Thermal Compound Review
When we think about achieving better cooling performance, we often focus on hardware solutions. However, the quality of the thermal compound/paste that interfaces between the chips and the cooler is another critical factor in getting better cooling performance from your cooler. Today we’ll take a look at a new thermal compound from Tuniq, well-known makers of a variety of cooling solutions, known TX-2. Will this product stand up against the incumbents in the market? We will attempt to answer that question in today’s review.

The Tuniq TX-2 thermal compound comes in a basic plastic bag with the syringe easily visible. Opening the package, we find a rather large syringe filled with the thermal compound. The syringe comes with 3.5g of compound, which will be plenty for a large number of applications.

I suspect that this syringe would last me for at least a year of very frequent use, as I use a lot of thermal paste for reviewing various cooling products. A large cap keeps the thermal compound in the syringe. As with many good thermal compounds, the TX-2 is non-conductive. This will prevent accidental shorts and other failures due to excessive thermal compound.

To test out the Tuniq TX-2 thermal compound, I applied the compound in a couple of different systems, both in CPU applications and a Northbridge application. I found the application to be very similar to that of the comparison compound, the Arctic Silver 5 compound; very easy to spread and apply with the syringe. Prior to applying thermal compound, I always try to clean the surface using Arctic Clean cleaning solution; this seems to work best to remove residual compound.
Testing:
Test System:
AMD 64+ X2 3800+ AM2
ECS GeForce 6100SM-M
HP 2GB DDR2 RAM
Sony DVD Writer
Idle temperatures were taken running Windows and full loads were taken while running gaming loops. Temperatures (in degrees Celsius) were recorded.
