Steelseries SteelSound 5H v2

The headset cord is covered with a soft fabric braid, which increases its durability and hides the two wires needed for the microphone and headset. The main cord is 1 meter long, but the headset comes with a 2 meter extension cord that gives you a generous 3 meters (10 feet) of total length. This seems more than enough for most applications but allows you greater flexibility. The contacts are gold-plated for an improved connection. Also located on the cord is a remote control, equipped with a handy volume knob, a microphone volume control (mute/low/high), and a clip.

But wait, I haven’t even gotten to the coolest feature of this headset- the microphone actually retracts into the earpiece. This allows for the mic to be practically hidden while not in use and should help reduce the chances of damaging/crushing the mic. The mic itself is attached to a flexible cord and is uni-directional, which means it picks up sound from all directions.

Putting on the headset, I first noticed how comfortable it felt compared to my cheapo behind-the-ear headset. The ear cushions fit well over the ears; it feels as if the cushion doesn’t touch the ear at all. The headset adjusts easily and accommodates my large head easily. The microphone is the right length and is also easy to adjust yet remains in place for long periods of time. Retracting the microphone is smooth and can be done without removing the headset.

Sound quality was impressive overall. Listening to music, the headset offered a wide range and had very little distortion that I could detect. The high frequency sounds were crisp, and the headset had a decent amount of deep bass (though not overly “thumping”). Also, I was happy to NOT hear that annoying background buzzing sound except at really high volumes, ones that would be too loud to listen comfortably to music. Although the headset does not have surround sound or noise-canceling features, they still provide a good sound experience, especially when gaming.

The microphone performed well; people thought my voice was crisp and the volume was at the right level. I found the mute button to be handy also, since I usually leave the microphone off while playing games like World of Warcraft so that other players don’t hear my wife complaining about me playing too much (just kidding, honey!).

Conclusion:

At ~$99 USD, the SteelSeries SteelSound 5H v2 is a high-quality and solid performing gaming headset that should satisfy the most discriminating gamers yet also please those looking for a decent set of headphones. The headset is comfortable to wear for long periods of times, and the retractable microphone is a handy feature. The only negative might be the price, as they aren’t cheap. But you get what you pay for. Overall, I would give this headset a 5 out of 5.

Pros:

+ Attractive design with long cord
+ Comfortable fit
+ Retractable microphone
+ Good sound quality

Cons:

- A little pricey
- No carrying case

Red&Blackness gives it 5 out of 5 dots
