Steelpad 5L Mousepad Review

Today we have SteelSeries’ latest offering in the mousepad marketplace, the Steelpad 5L. We have reviewed a couple of other SteelSeries mousepads (the 4D and the original Steelpad) and were impressed yet not completely satisfied. Will this latest offering answer all of our mousepad needs? Let’s find out.

About Steel Series:

SteelSeries is all about gaming. Our mission is to create performance enhancing gaming gear, created for and by leading professional gamers. We continuously strive to better ourselves, and work with leading professional gamers from 3 different continents to create our products. The headquarters handle all planning, production and partner coordination.

For logistical reasons we also have sales offices in Asia (Taipei, Taiwan) and USA (Los Angeles, California). From Taipei we can each the entire Asian market, as well as New Zealand and Australia. The Steelpad 5L comes in a plastic see-through package with a cardboard insert describing the features of the mousepad. Inside the package is simply the mousepad itself, with a piece of paper protecting the rubber on the bottom of the pad. No carrying case is provided with the pad, which is a feature some other high-end mousepads provide.

The first thing I noticed was the size of the Steelpad 5L; it’s the biggest mousepad I’ve ever seen, measuring 380 x 280 mm (14.9 in x 11 in). In today’s age of widescreen/dual-screen monitors, the extra surface area comes in handy. Another thing I couldn’t help but notice when opening the package was that the mousepad smelled like burnt rubber; not the most pleasant smell, but it went away after a couple of days. The front-side of the pad has a futuristic-looking scene on it, and the backside has a black background with rubber elements splattered randomly over it.

The Steelpad 5L is a single-piece, rigid design; not the two-piece design of the Steelpad 4D. Its name “5L” stands for the 5 different layers the mousepad is made of. As described on the website, “The first layers consists of plastic coating on a cloth material, utilizing the strength and durability of plastic and the feel of quality cloth. The middle layer is composed of specially designed soft rubber foam to provide the feeling of softness. The bottom layers provide stability, as a highly durable plastic layer guarantees the shape of the pad, followed by small soft rubber elements offering complete non-slip steadiness.”
