Noctua 120mm Fans Review

With computer components generating more and more heat, getting rid of the heat is becoming increasingly important. One of the main ways that most computers dissipate this heat is by using fans. Today we’ll take a look at a couple of 120mm fans from Noctua, who claim that their fans offer no-frills performance and quiet operations. Read on to find out if these fans live up to their claims.

About Noctua:

Noctua aims at establishing a new level of quality and performance "Designed in Austria" through paying attention to the users' needs in a market burdened with all kinds of frills and furbelows and providing sound-optimised premium components, which serve their purpose in a smart, precise and reliable manner.

Noctua arises from a cooperation between the Austrian Rascom Computerdistribution Ges.m.b.H and the Taiwanese Kolink International Corporation and entertains a development partnership with the Austrian Institute of Heat Transmission and Fan Technology (Österreichisches Institut für Wärmeübertragung und Ventilatorentechnik, ÖIWV). These connections form the key to the achievement of our goal: The partnership with the ÖIWV permits the application of scientific measurement instrumentation, methods of calculation and simulation technology in the R&D process. Rascom's long, customer-oriented experience in developing and distributing sound-optimised high-end products ensures a clear focus on the users' needs. The use of Kolink's advanced manufacturing technology and ultra-modern production plants allows us to efficiently implement our technical edge and provide solutions of the highest standard in quality and performance.

Features:

Sound-optimised blade geometry and profile: The NF-S12 is the first fan employing a novel rotor which was developed by the Austrian Institute for Heat-Transmission and Fan Technology (Österreichisches Institut für Wärmeübertragung und Ventilatorentechnik, ÖIWV). Thanks to the special optimisation of the blade geometry towards ultra low noise application, the NF-S12 is up to 10% more quiet than current high-end fans at the same flow rate.

Self-stabilising oil-pressure bearing (SSO bearing): The NF-S12 series are equipped with a magnetically centred, self lubricating oil-pressure bearing that provides a new level of quietness and long-term stability.

Noctua sent us two versions of the NF-S12 fans, the NF-S12-800 and the NF-S12-1200, with the difference being the rotational speed of the fans (800 rpm vs. 1200 rpm). However, it was difficult to tell the two models apart from their packaging, other than looking at the UPC code. The fans come in a colorful package with a clear window displaying the fan. The back of the package describes some of the unique features of the fan and the specifications.

Opening up the package, the fan and its associated accessories are found to be well-secured in a customized plastic form. Along with the fan itself, the package comes with four vibration compensators, a 3:4 pin adaptor, an ultra-low-noise adaptor, and a set of regular fan screws.
