GlacialTech GP-PS550BP 550W Power Supply Review
Deciding on a power supply can be a tough choice, with a wide range of suppliers and features for each unit. While power output is important, there are other factors such as efficiency, noise, and even looks that are equally as important. Today we’ll be looking at a 550W power supply from GlacialTech that has been designed with performance in mind. We will keep that in mind while we examine this product and compare it to some of its competition.

The GlacialTech 550W Power Supply arrived in a colorful box displaying a picture of the supply. The package also provides a list of features/specifications and a graph showing the supply’s noise (fan speed) as a function of output. One of the main features of this supply is that it is a switch mode power supply. As you might be able to see, the fan speed varies depending on the output. The supply is actually noiseless at lower power outputs up to a higher 4500 RPM at 100% power usage.

Opening up the package, the power supply can be found nestled snugly surrounded by custom foam supports. As you can see, all of the power supply’s cables are hard-wired onto the supply instead of being modular. While I enjoy the convenience of modular cables, they typically add more resistance and thus decrease the efficiency of the supply.

Taking a closer look at the PSU, the unit has a simple silver matte exterior with a single cooling fan, 80mm in size. Surprisingly, the unit is completely sealed on the “bottom” (the one exposed to the inside of the computer); typically power supplies have either vents or even large fans on this surface. The panel lists the various rail outputs, with the 3.3V rail rated at 25A, the 5V rated at 25A, and the dual 12V rails rated at 18A individually.

The power supply has a basic set of cables/connectors; I was a little disappointed to see that the majority of the cables were not sleeved/twisted. The connectors on the 4-pin multi-use/Molex connectors did have the quick-release feature that allows you to easily remove the connectors with a pinch of the two tabs. Another concern is the relatively small number (5) of these 4-pin connectors. If you have a lot of peripherals, this might be a limiting factor.
