Geeks Netgear Wireless 802.11g Router Review
Still using one of those old-fashioned 802.11b wireless routers? While this format is probably the most common, its smaller bandwidth and transfer speeds are beginning to show their age, especially if you are streaming any video content over the network. Today we’ll be looking at one such upgrade option offered by that popular online retailer Geeks.com: the Netgear WGR614 Wireless 802.11g Router. Have they finally made wireless routers plug-in-play, or will you need to mess around a bunch of connection settings or extra computer parts? We’re here to answer that question in this review.

As with all the products I’ve received from Geeks.com, the Netgear WGR614 Wireless 802.11g arrived well-packaged in a large cardboard box. The outside of the package was rather plain; simply the name of the brand on front. Note that this is a refurbished product that comes with a 90-day warranty. Opening the package, we find the router, an RJ-45 Ethernet cable, an AC adapter, and two mounting clips. No software or instruction manual comes with the product, though you can easily get both from the Netgear website.

The router itself is much smaller than my previously installed 4 year old Linksys 802.11b router; it is thinner and takes up a smaller footprint. On the front are a series of status LEDs, providing information on power, wireless connections, internet connectivity, and the status of the 4 wired ports. The LEDs are easy to understand and easy to read even from far distances.

Looking at the rear of the router, we see the 4 outgoing ports for the wired connections (LAN ports) and the incoming Internet port (WAN port). Also there is the power port and a small wireless antenna. The antenna articulates in every direction, providing a way to optimize the wireless signal.
