Linksys Wireless Media Center Extender Review

Have you built or thinking about building a home theater PC but don’t want to put the computer next to your TV? If so, today’s review might be of interest to you; Geeks.com, popular online retailers, sent us a Linksys Wireless Media Center Extender for review. This nifty device acts as a bridge between your TV and your HTPC, allowing streaming video via a wireless network without any extra computer parts. Is this product as useful as it sounds, or does it cause more headache than benefit? That’s what we’re here to find out.

As with all the products I’ve received from Geeks.com, the Linksys Wireless Media Center Extender arrived well-packaged in a large cardboard box. The outside of the package was rather plain; actually there was no description of the product on the box. In case you weren’t aware of these types of products, this unit interfaces with a PC equipped with Windows Media Center Edition 2005 and allows you to connect between the PC and the TV using either a wireless or wired connection. This is especially handy when the TV and PC are located in separate rooms.

Opening the package, we find the media center extender snuggly secured by two custom foam inserts on both ends. Along with the media center itself, the package comes with a box full of accessories to be used with the extender.

At 17” x 12.5” x 2”, the extender has a similar size to a standard a/v component such as a VCR or DVD, though it’s a bit shorter. The front panel has a green Windows MCE button, an Enter button, a Back Button, a directional pad, and a power switch; overall I’d say it has a very slick interface that would do well on top of the TV or in a component cabinet.

The back of the unit has a wide variety of outputs once again similar to a VCR or DVD player. On the video side, there is a component video out, S-video out, and an RCA video out. For audio, there is either digital audio or RCA (white/red) audio out. Unfortunately, there is no DVI or HDMI video output on this unit. Along with the audio/video ports, there are a couple of USB ports, an Ethernet jack, an IR port, and an antenna.
