Corsair Flash Voyager GT 16GB Review

Flash memory has gotten bigger the past year and we have reviewed sizes up to 32 GB already. Today we are going to look at the Flash Voyager GT with 16GB of memory and since it is the GT line it's supposed to be a bit faster than the ordinary Voyager from Corsair. This line of flash memory have shown itself to be extremely durable and still has been able to perform well. We have tested the Voyager line before with boiling them, dropping from high hights, freezing, and even hitting them with a hammer and they have been able to withstand this treatment. Lets see what type of performance we can expect from this.

About Corsair:

Corsair has been a leader in the design and manufacture of high-speed modules since 1994. Our focus has always been on supporting the special demands of mission-critical servers and high-end workstations, as well as the performance demands of extreme gamers.

As a pioneer in high-speed module design, Corsair is a trusted supplier to many computer manufacturers. In high-density memory solutions, Corsair has always been one of the first suppliers to achieve advanced qualifications on Intel, Tyan and SuperMicro server platforms. We also work closely with other major server platform manufacturers to release product that is 100% compatible with their latest server products.

Features:

Includes the True Crypt security application (Windows Vista/XP/2000 compatible only) allowing for a virtual encrypted drive using AES-256 encryption (not preloaded on 2GB models)

Limited 10-year warranty

The product comes packed in a plastic cover so you can see it before you buy it. On the back you can read about its features and specifications.

With the USB memoery itself you get a USB extension cable and necklace so you can hang it around your neck. The USB stick is pretty much the size of the USB cable that you get with it. This GT drive is as small as all the other older Voyager drives on the market.

If you remove the cap on the unit you will reveal the USB connector itself, make sure not to lose the cap as that seals and covers the USB connector from dust and water in case you happen to drop it. On the back of the device they have decided to put their website address and if I look at a normal Voyager drive the URL is www.corsairmemory.com while the GT has www.corsair.com so they must have changed it lately.

Testing:

If we look at the results and compare to our previous 32GB Voyager drive the difference is quite big. This GT drive is alot faster when it comes to the test results from Sisoft Sandra.

Transfer Times:

We transfered a 750MB file to the drive itself and it took us 44 seconds while the older GT drive took 48 seconds and the normal Voyager ended up doing it at 58 seconds so there is a noticeble difference.

Durability:

As we said earlier we have tried the Voyager drives quite hard and this time it was no different, it was able to whitstand throwing, water, and even getting stomped on so if you are in the market for a very durable and solid drive this might be something for you.

Conclusion:

The drive includes Truecrypt software if you dont' feel safe with your files on it you can just encrypt them with the powerful utility. Otherwise both pricewise and performance wise this drive is extremely good. We saw fast performance from it along with some amazing durability in our tests. The drive offers you 16GB of fast performance so I cannot really see a reason why you should not buy this. I know there are a few smaller drives on the market but I doubt they will be able to take as much beating as this drive has done. Overall a good product which we will offer with our recommended award.

Pros:

+ Stable performance
+ Small
+ Durable

Cons:

- None this far
