Another review from Murdoc. This time he is taking a look at a 7in1 media reader from Beantech. Stay tuned as he does alot of testing and has put some nice effort into this review just for you guys/girls :)

When I heard about this product its idea seamed great an internal 7in1 card reader, when I finally got hold of it, it didn’t disappoint. The device comes well packed containing, the reader, USB connection cable, software, manual, internal USB cables for the hub, screws and a PCI blanking plate will a hole to accommodate the USB cable. I removed the device from the packaging. The cables were clear with silver braiding which is very popular these days. The unit is constructed from aluminium so it doesn’t look a miss in an alu case.

The device has 2 USB ports on its left, these can be connected to the computer via an internal motherboard USB header, to do this you must consult your motherboard manual but be warned that if connected wrong it could damage your computer, this warning along with instructions of the connection are contained within the manual. The brushed aluminium of the device looks great, there is black text ‘printed’ onto the front of the peripheral, this displays which cards plug in where and their orientation, the meaning of the LED’s are also printed next to them, the front panel overall is clean and effective.

I was unable at first to work out the function of the access button on the front, when pressed the central part of the drive shoots forwards, after consulting the manual I could see that this was to be able to pull out the centre part and use it as a tiny 7 in 1 external media card reader, this I thought was an amazing idea. When removed the back of the device boasts a small USB cable that tucks into the back, so no need to have dangling wires or have to carry a cable when using the device away from your machine. You can just press the button remove it from the one machine take it to another and connect it up, makes it nice and easy. The small ejected device is well made and constructed, the USB type B plug in the back of the device is how it connects through the internal ‘cradle’ this also means you can use your own cables, say your new flashy USB lighted cable.

The device is USB 2.0 unfortunately I cannot make use of this as I only have USB 1.1 ports. The device will accept the following cards Compact Flash, IBM Micro Drive, Smart Media Card, Secure Digital Card, MultiMedia Card, Memory Stick Card, Memory Stick Pro Card. That’s a lot of cards this little device can read. Naturally I wont be able to test them all as I don’t know anyone with all these cards, but having the capability to read so many cards is great I only need 1 reader to read my SM, CF and MM cards apposed to requiring one for each and if in the future I decide to get a IBM micro drive I’m covered. I was a bit curious to why the packaging showed a Minidisk player with caption mp3, as far as I know you can’t use any cards with a minidisk player just…well minidisks.
