ArctiClean

Today we are looking at one of Arctic Silver's newest product. The product we are going to look at is maybe another option or a replacement for acetone, isopropyl alcohol or other type of cleaning products which we "geeks" are using today, for cleaning our processors, video cards and so on. Many of us know that acetone for example isn't at all nice to our skin, it has a tendency to dry out our skin on the fingers etc. Don't forget the smell either which makes you sometimes feel sick. Well, I can promise you already now that this product doesn't smell bad or does any harm on your skin when using it.

About Arctic Silver:

They are located in USA and most of use would agree that they are for sure one of the best manufactures of high-performance thermal compound and adhesives. I have been using Arctic Silver compound since I bought my first computer back in 2000. Or was it 2001... I'm getting old! :( I would gladly write down some company history and so on, but I couldn't find any on their site. I think that you guys and girls are much more interested in the product though, so let's begin with it!

The product:

ArctiClean comes in two different bottles which is marked with 1 and 2. The first one is also known as "ArctiClean 1 Thermal Material Remover" and the second one as "ArctiClean 2 Thermal Surface Purifier". I will go over what each bottle is used for in a second. Take a look at the pictures once again, as you can see both bottles have different colors on the cap, white for the Nr.1 and blue for the Nr.2. So you can't mix them up I guess. Anyway, both bottles have their purpose printed on the front and on the back you can find instructions how and when to use them. If someone wonders, the ArctiClean kit is avalible in two different sizes. I have the smaller kit which is a pair of 30ml bottles or 60ml in total, the bigger one is a kit of two 120ml bottles which is 4 times more in total. I have been using these two for a couple installations and I haven't even used 1/5 of both bottles, so the small kit will for sure last long for a normal user or a "half" geek. :P

So what are these two individual bottles for? According to Arctic Silver, ArctiClean 1 uses a proprietary combination of non-toxic biodegradable solvents to emulsify thermal greases or thermal pads. The citrus and soy based solvents in ArctiClean 1 match or exceed many hazardous and volatile solvents such as fluorinated and chlorinated organic solvents, acetone, MEK (methyl ethyl ketone), mineral spirits, isopropyl alcohol, and toluene. ArctiClean 2, The cationic surfactants in ArctiClean 2 remove any residue left by the ArctiClean 1 leaving a pristine surface for the application of a new thermal interface material. It also incorporates advanced flash corrosion inhibitors that minimize the corrosion layer on copper and aluminum allowing for more intimate contact between the thermal interface material and the heatsink.
I can fill in that ArctiClean 1 smells really good! Almost like orange or mandarin. ArctiClean 2 in other hand smells just a little orange. I also agree with Overclockers.com that the ArctiClean 2 is more viscous than the ArctiClean 1.

Both bottles have this kind of top. It makes it so much easier to apply the two different fluids on the processor, gpu etc. You can hold the bottle upside down without the cap on and without any pressure of course, and just a little drop comes out. So the whole content won't come out over the processor when your working with this.

You can find full instructions how to use these two bottles on the Arctic Silver site. Or if you're too lazy, click over HERE. First thing we are going to break... Ops, clean today is my or actually my moms s939 3200+ Winchester. As you may see, I have Arctic Silver 5 on it which takes a while to clean of with acetone and paper. So, take the ArctiClean 1 and put the fluid so you have it all over the processors "IHS". Wait for ~1 minute and...

Use some paper and just wipe all the thermal compound and the ArctiClean of. In my case, everything came of with only one wipe. Okey, almost everything! This is really amazing anyway! As you can see in the other picture, we have an dark layer on the IHS which is some residue of the ArctiClean 1 fluid. So what we are going to do now is moving on and use the ArctiClean 2...

It's almost the same procedure with the ArctiClean 2 as with the ArctiClean 1, put several drops on the IHS and take some paper and wipe it all off. The result? See for yourself in the picture to the right!

Next test object is my Thermalright SLK-948-U heatsink, which is made of 100% copper. As you can see the copper has some corrosion on it. It's the same procedure on the heatsink as on the processor to clean it with the ArctiClean. In the second picture you can clearly see that the ArctiClean 1 have begun to eat on the corrosion and on the thermal compound...

Wipe all the ArctiClean 1 off once again with some paper as me or with some lint-free cloth. Once again it only takes one wipe to have it all off, this is way to easy! Well, since all my "good" shots after cleaning with the ArctiClean 2 turned to really bad once, I can only give a half good one for you. :/ I can say though that the heatsink was almost good as new and all the corrosion was gone from the base!

Let's clean up my X800XL and give this product some stars >>>>> Page 2

Thank you Arctic Silver for making this review possible
