Arctic Cooling MX2 Thermal Compound Review

When we think about achieving better cooling performance, we often focus on hardware solutions. However, the quality of the thermal compound/paste that interfaces between the chips and the cooler is another critical factor in getting better cooling performance from your cooler. Today we’ll take a look at a new thermal compound from Arctic Cooling, well-known makers of a variety of cooling solutions, known simply as MX2. Will this latest generation of thermal compounds live up to its predecessors? We will attempt to answer that question in today’s review.

About Arctic Cooling:

ARCTIC COOLING is a private owned company founded in 2001 with headquarters in Switzerland, offices in Hong Kong and with production facilities in Asia. The team of ARCTIC COOLING insists on international young highly educated people with business, technical and communicational skills.

This striving for excellence is integrated in all processes and is a matter of course. ARCTIC COOLING's core competencies are multifarious such as systematic noise reduction, copper and aluminum heatsinks, customizing of thermal solutions, "Just-in-time" fan manufacturing, Ceramic Bearing, Multiple Signal Output / BIOS interface and low noise fan blade design.

Specifications:

High Thermal Conductivity
Low Thermal Resistance
Non-Electrical Conductive
Non-Capacitive
Non-Curing
Non-Corrosive
No Bleeding
Odorless

The Arctic Cooling MX2 thermal compound comes well-packaged in a clear plastic package with the dual-fan module prominently displayed on the front. The back provides a list of the specification and some typical performance numbers.

Opening the package, we find a rather large syringe filled with the thermal compound. The syringe comes with 4g of compound, which will be plenty for a large number of applications. I suspect that this syringe would last me for at least a year of very frequent use, as I use a lot of thermal paste for reviewing various cooling products. A large cap keeps the thermal compound in the syringe.

If you look at the features of the product, you’ll notice the long list of “non” features, such as non-conductive, non-corrosive, etc. These features aren’t seen but are very important nonetheless, especially the non-conductive nature of the compound. This will prevent accidental shorts and other failures due to excessive thermal compound.

To test out the MX2 thermal compound, I applied the compound to both a CPU application and a video card/GPU application. I found the application to be very similar to that of the comparison compound, the Arctic Silver 5 compound; very easy to spread and apply with the syringe.
