Arctic Cooling Accelero S2 Video Card Cooler Review
Like most other computer components, we’ve seen tremendous gains in the level of video card performance, as manufacturers push the envelope and develop new technology. Unfortunately, along with those gains typically comes an unwanted byproduct- heat. Arctic Cooling, well-known manufacturers of a wide range of cooling products, has developed a new line of passive VGA coolers that claim to reduce heat significantly without producing any noise. Too good to be true? That’s what we’re here to find out today.

The Arctic Cooling Accelero S2 cooler comes well-packaged in a clear plastic package with the cooler prominently displayed on the front. The back provides a glimpse at the VGA block as well as a listing of all the video card the cooler is compatible with. Arctic Cooling also produces a similarly designed cooler, the Accelero S1, which is compatible with a wide range of coolers; odds are that if your cooler is compatible with one, it’s compatible with the other.

Opening the package, the cooler is easily extracted from the package. Along with the cooler itself, the package contains 8 RAM heatsinks, a vented PCI bracket, and a set of installation instructions and mounting hardware. The review sample also came with a detailed set of instructions on how to configure the case; as we’ll see later, the setup of the computer has a significant impact on the cooling performance.

The cooling module is made of copper base that interfaces with the video card GPU and a large set of Aluminum heat fins, connected by 4 copper heat-pipes. The copper base appeared to be machined-smooth and free of imperfections, and I was glad to see a plastic covering preventing scratches or oils from degrading the important conductive surface. Furthermore, the copper base comes with some Arctic Cooling thermal paste preinstalled on it. Overall, I was impressed by the size to weight ratio of the cooler; despite being almost as large as the video card, it weighed very little.
