The Apex SL-8600 EPS power supply (PSU) arrived in a nicely decorated cardboard box with a large window providing a view of the unit. The back of the package describes some of the product features and output ratings of the various power supplies that Apex offers. The package notes the unit’s support of Intel and AMD dual core processors. Looking at the specifications, I was impressed by the high efficiency number of 80+% at full load.

Opening the package, the contents are protected by a clear plastic window. Included with the power supply are a power cord and a simple user’s manual. I was a little surprised to find no other accessories such as cable ties, screws, etc. But the essentials are there. The power supply itself is not in any bag but is covered in tight plastic shrinkwrap.

Taking a closer look at the PSU, the first thing I noticed was that the cables are connected to the supply, meaning that this is not a modular power supply where the cables can be disconnected as needed. Nowadays, many of the top-notch supplies offer this feature, though it does reduce the power supply’s efficiency. There is a single 120mm cooling fan on the bottom of the supply, and the rear has an open grill to allow the air to flow out of the supply. The rear of the power supply has a simple on-off switch, which glows blue when powered on. The side panel lists the various rail outputs, with the 3.3V rail rated at 24A, the 5V rated at 30A, and the dual 12V rails rated at 22A individually. Other power supplies offer quad (4) 12V rails for improved stability, while this power supply only has 2 rails. While I don’t think this is an issue for most users, this might be something to consider if you have a lot of high-power peripherals that demand stable power.
