Zalman CNPS9700 NT CPU Cooler Review

We’ve seen a lot of intricate CPU coolers, from large air-cooled units to liquid coolers to peltiers. Yet despite all the different companies that create these coolers, one name often comes to mind: Zalman. AcousticPC.com, well-known retailer for a wide variety of quiet performance products, provided us a sample of one of their popular CPU cooler offerings, the Zalman CNPS9700 NT. Will good things come in large packages? That is the question we’re going to answer in this review

As with all products I’ve received from AcousticPC.com, the Zalman CNPS9700 NT CPU cooler arrived undamaged in a secure cardboard box. The front of the box has a nice plastic window through which the CPU cooler can be seen, and the side and back has a list of specifications and features.

One thing to note is that CNPS stands for Computer Noise Prevention System, which is Zalman’s approach to quiet CPU coolers. The cooler has an automatic fan speed control feature, which keeps the fan at lower speeds during lower temperatures using a pulse width modulated (PWM) signal.

Once opened, the box reveals the CPU cooler nicely nestled in a custom plastic mold. Along with the cooler itself, the package also comes with a couple of mounting brackets to adapt to different CPUs, screws, some Zalman thermal grease, and a set of instructions.

Taking a closer look at the cooler, I first notice that this cooler has a large form factor, similar to the recently reviewed Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme CPU cooler. This is one big cooler, with a 110mm fan surrounded by a pure copper base and heat fins. The cooler is also heavy (760g), which is higher than the Intel/AMD weight specification of 450g. This doesn’t mean that the cooler will break the CPU, but rather that care should be taken when moving the computer.
