Silentmaxx Frostbite CPU Cooler Review
CPU coolers come in all shapes and sizes, many with very intricate designs. However, sometimes a computer doesn’t need a fancy cooling setup when a simpler yet effective solution might do. AcousticPC.com, a great online retailer of a variety of quiet performance computer products, sent us a sample of one of their popular CPU coolers, the Silentmaxx Frostbite CPU Cooler, which has a simple design package but promises respectable cooling performance nonetheless. Will this vertical cooler perform well compared to horizontal coolers? We will attempt to answer that question in this review.

As with all products I’ve received from AcousticPC.com, the Silentmaxx Frostbite CPU cooler came well-packaged and arrived without damage. The cooler comes in an icy blue package with a clear display on the front showing the cooler and a list of features/specifications on the back.

Opening the package, we find the cooler itself nestled securely inside a custom plastic clamshell casing, with the accessories contained in a separate box. Along with the cooler itself, the package contains some standoffs, mounting brackets, screws, a tube of thermal grease, and a set of instructions. I was actually surprised by the small number of mounting accessories needed for the cooler, given that it’s compatible with most single and dual-core processors from both Intel and AMD. The large range of compatibility adds to the versatility of the product.

Taking a closer look at the cooler, the first thing to notice is the vertical orientation of the cooler, where the fan/airflow is pointed towards the motherboard and CPU. This is somewhat surprising, as most of today’s high performance coolers (like the Zalman and Thermalright coolers we recently reviewed from AcousticPC.com) are horizontal coolers that flow air parallel to the motherboard. The Frostbite cooler is easily the largest vertical cooler I’ve ever seen, with a large 120mm fan

Unlike most vertical coolers, the Silentmaxx Frostbite cooler is almost as tall as a horizontal cooler, with a fairly large separation between the copper base and the heat fins/fan. This design improves air flow and thus thermal performance.
