NesteQ ASM 620W PSU Review

The rear of the PSU has a fine mess grill to allow for airflow and the standard on/off switch and outlet for the power cable. Also in the rear is the fan controller; this PSU is what they call “semi-fanless”, meaning it has a fanless mode as well as a manual/automatic fan-on mode. More on the operating modes in a bit.

Looking at the PSU cables, this power supply comes with pretty much all that you could possibly need for a computer build and are all of high quality. Of note, there are 4 SATA cables, 8 multi-use 4-pin connectors, and support for an SLI graphics card. The cables are all sleeved and come with easy extract connectors.

Installation of the PSU was fairly straightforward and like most other power supplies. Simply place the PSU into the case and attach it using the standard four screws that are included. Finally, plug in all the peripherals you need and you’re ready to go. Despite the large number of cables, they are all flexible and have plenty of length.

The NesteQ PSU has what is termed an “advanced silent mode”, which allows the PSU to run essentially fanless, with the fan only turning on when absolutely needed. During my testing of this supply, the fan never went on, even at high loads. NesteQ states that the PSU runs 99% fanless in this mode, which is very impressive.
Along with the ASM mode, the supply can also be operated with the fan turned on and controlled via the handy fan speed dial on the rear of the supply. Thanks to the large 120mm fan, noise with the fans on is barely audible over the other fans in the system. At the highest speed, you can definitely hear the air moving, but given the great performance in the ASM mode I’m not sure why you would use the fans at all. Overall, this is the quietest PSU I’ve ever seen.

Testing:
Testing was done by measuring the voltages at the connectors with a multimeter. Idle voltages were taken running Windows and full loads were taken while running 3dmark2005. Results of similar tests on a previously reviewed Corsair 750W PSU and the Ultra X2 750W PSU are included for comparison.

3,3V Testing:

The 3.3v rail performance was very stable, as with most PSUs on the market.
